INTRODUCTION
1TrashEmptier is a 'drag and drop' utility that works only if you are running System 7. To use it, you have to drag a disk, file or folder over its icon. Trying to open 1TrashEmptier by double-clicking it will only bring its 'About…' box.
The application has two purposes: it can selectively empty the Trash of one volume, and it can delete files and folders without using the Finder's Trash.
The action of 1TrashEmptier depends on the nature of the icon that you drag over it: disk, folder or file (document or application).
1 - MAIN FUNCTION.
When you drag the icon of a volume (hard drive, removable or floppy) over the 1TrashEmptier icon, the program deletes all the files from that volume that were previously put into the Trash. There is no dialog asking you to confirm. This action is similar to choosing 'Empty Trash' from the 'Special' menu of the Finder, except that it deletes only the files belonging to one disk.
However, if a file is locked, you will have to answer a dialog asking you to confirm the deletion. If you want to erase all the other locked files without seeing this dialog for each one, click on the 'Delete all the locked files' button.
When you drag the icon of a disk while holding the 'Option' key down, 1TrashEmptier will eject the volume after emptying the Trash. The start-up disk is never ejected.
2 - SECONDARY FUNCTION.
1TrashEmptier also allows you to immediately and permanently erase a file or folder. Be careful because this action is irreversible. When this function is used, a confirmation dialog appears.
POWER USERS can avoid this dialog by holding down the 'Control' and 'Command' keys.
If the 'Option' key is held down the volume will be ejected. This is handy for emptying a floppy disk in one step. Simply select all the files and folders on the floppy with 'cmd - A', then drag the selected icons onto 1TrashEmptier while holding down the 'Option' key. The files and folders are deleted and the disk is ejected.
****IMPORTANT WARNING****
Note that if you drag an ALIAS over 1TrashEmptier, the ORIGINAL will be erased, NOT the alias. This is due to the fact that the Finder 'resolves' the alias and passes the references of the original to applications. The confirmation dialog will give you the name of the original file or folder. To avoid deleting the wrong file, it is good practice to always give aliases a name that differs from the original.
However, if the alias is in the Trash or in a folder dragged over 1TrashEmptier, it is the alias that will be deleted, and not the original.
ORIGIN of 1TrashEmptier.
I do incremental backups on SyQuest cartridges and I regularly need to empty them to start another backup. To do this I had to empty the Trash, which also deleted all the other files present from other disks. I looked for a Freeware or Shareware capable of a selective deletion and could not find any. So I created 1TrashEmptier when I had time, and added the second function as a bonus.
